If you have read part 1 of the series you'll know that eating foods you are sensitive to may lead to symptoms including:
Headaches / Migraines
Lethargy and noticeable tiredness
Stomach distention / pain
Unexplained muscle soreness
Water retention (your socks leave marks)
Inability to lose bodyweight
Skin disorders, irritation or rashes
Diarrhoea or soft stools
Loss of short term memory
Increased susceptibility to illness / common cold
The most common of these being bloating, IBS-like symptoms, achey joints, water retention and noticeable tiredness.
You may also remember how I said that before now, my initial advice to those who experience such symptoms has been to cut out common sensitivity foods. These included things like:
Followed by a specific protocol designed to help promote optimal gut health and good bacteria.
In the last couple of weeks I have received a reasonably extensive batch of results to pass on to a number of people around the UK who have had one of our test kits from the lab.
Personally, I was extremely excited to receive such definitive information and help me take the guess work out of their meal plans. With the results in, follow up appointments where arranged.
I had an idea of what to expect; gluten, wheat, cow's dairy, peppers, yeast etc.
I began to open each individuals results pack, one by one.
Wow was I wrong!
Mind Blown isn't even close!

Surprised? I certainly was!
Now bear in mind that all of these food sensitivities where not associated to one person. Some had as few as 4 reactive foods, whereas others had as many as 32. As the results poor in I am expecting this list to grow.
Those I have highlighted in bold I was not surprised about, but look at the rest!
Cinnamon is an ingredient I recommend people consume to help with insulin resistance. Blueberries and blackberries are nutrient dense fruits that are fairly low in sugars / 100g that I often suggest people have instead of other, thicker skinned fruits. Beef, Duck and Tuna are all regular staples of client's meal plans to help them access good quality protein and fats. Eggs! The staple breakfast food. High in vitamins A, D, E & K, healthy fats and protein. Cashew nut milk and Rice milk are common Cow milk replacements for those that seem to be sensitive to lactose. Garlic! Garlic is in nearly every one of our recipes on the Online Members area.
I was genuinely baffled.
What was more surprising, was that those who had many sensitivities (the lab referred to these as 'busy patents') where not necessarily sensitive to common problematic foods such as gluten.
There were no trends.
Not one set of results where similar to another.
Brewer's and Baker's yeast tended to crop up in most cases, but no results were the same.
What did this teach me?...
You cannot make assumptions. Not one individual is equal to another. Sounds obvious, but I have spent the best part of 4 years trying to help people by advising them to restrict certain foods based on means/averages/correlations found in studies published in reputable journal articles.
"What works for one does not work for another" could not be more apparent right now.
Want to know my own personal results?
Disappointed? Nah, I was expecting more (perhaps I even wanted more - a definite answer to explain symptoms such as tiredness), but I guess I have to be pleased that I have a lot more flexibility than first assumed.
Eggs came as a surprise to me. I eat anywhere between 4-6 eggs for breakfast every single morning, without fail!
"Every cloud has a silver lining" though, I guess.... it means I now have to be creative when it comes to creating some breakfast recipes for our members!
I cannot stress the importance of following your very own meal plan as opposed to that of somebody else. Before now, all of my nutrition advice has come from my education, experience, an elimination diet and good-old trial and error. Now, however, the guess work has been completely removed.
These tests may not be as accessible as we'd like. They may be relatively expensive, however they are so worth it! They're certainly an investment in your health. What is more important than that?!
The next step.
Those I have already spoken with have had their protocols explained to them. The foods that they are sensitive to will be removed from their diets, of course, and strategies are now being put in place to help improve their gut bacteria, gut lining and ability to improve digestion.
I am currently using this week to put together some bespoke meal plans for them based on their individual results.
For me, I can now reintroduce foods that I've been mistakenly cutting out of my diet for at least 7 years. I no longer need to feel guilty after eating certain foods that I thought would cause me harm. On the flip side, I now realise that I certainly need to stay away from bread, bagels, and other baked goods. I need to be a little more creative at breakfast times and the 'odd beer' is now no longer worth it!
For some of our customers, they now have a reason to be more thoughtful about their food intake. They are no longer eating, what they perceived were, healthy foods despite doing themselves harm. There is no longer any guesswork and it has allowed me to create meal plans and additional nutrition advice that even more bespoke and tailored.
